Home visits in Woodside

What a home visit in Woodside typically looks like.

Woodside runs north from St George's Cross towards the Forth and Clyde Canal, where the West End meets the city centre. It's a close community of tenements, post-war flats and newer housing association homes, with Woodside Library on St George's Road.

Homes in Woodside

Alongside traditional sandstone tenements, Woodside has council-built flats from its post-war redevelopment, including the 23-storey blocks around Cedar Street. In a high-rise the lift is the usual way in and out, so part of the plan is what happens if it's out of service: we practise the stairs and agree a back-up plan. In a tenement it's the common stair and the close door. Indoors, we focus on getting in and out of bed, on and off the toilet, and in and out of the shower or bath.

Getting out and about

St George's Cross subway station is at the southern end of Woodside, with Kelvinbridge a short walk west and Cowcaddens the next stop towards the city centre. Maryhill Road, Garscube Road, Great Western Road and New City Road carry the main bus routes, and the M8 runs along the southern edge. For walking practice, the Forth and Clyde Canal towpath to the north is long and flat, and Kelvingrove Park is within reach to the south-west.

Working alongside your GP and NHS team

The Woodside Health and Care Centre on Garscube Road, opened in 2019, brings several GP practices together with district nursing, physiotherapy, podiatry and a day centre for older people. Gartnavel General Hospital and the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Govan are the main hospitals for the West End. We fit around the NHS teams already involved, and you can refer yourself or a relative without a GP letter.
